You gotta warm up first!
It cannot be stressed enough that warming up is essential to any sort of heavy physical activity. Push ups are no exclusion. A full body warm up is highly recommended, since push ups are most effective when done with a rest of a workout program. Otherwise, basic arm, chest and back stretches will do the trick.

A simple warm up process is to do the following:
- Do a few jumping jacks to get your body ready. 5-10 repetitions of 1-3 sets are fine.
- Stretch your triceps and your shoulders. Put one arm over your head, and pull your elbow back with your other hand. Hold that stretch for a good 20 seconds. Repeat that with your other arm. Do 2 sets of this.
- Stretch your back and neck. Lie down, stomach towards the ground. Place your two hands in front of you, and push your chest upwards. Your legs should be touching the floor, and you should curve towards the ceiling. Don't forget to look upwards to stretch your neck. Hold this stretch for a good 30 seconds.
